containing cottonseed hulls (12.5 percent) or a mixture of cottonseed hulls (5 percent) plus alfalfa meal (7.5 percent) as a,source of roughage. No marked effect of roughage source at this time or later in the feeding period was apparent (Table 4). The dry matter, starch and whole kernel percentages were higher later in the feeding trial, and pH was lower. Whether this difference is due to a reduced digestibility with age and time on feed or a ration composition difference is under study.

Preweaning growth traits for Senepol, Hereford, and reciprocal crossbred calves and feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of steers.
We conducted a multiyear study in two phases to determine preweaning performance traits of Senepol (S x S), Hereford (H x H), and reciprocal (S x H and H x S) F1 crossbred calves and feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of steers. In Phase I, from 1985 to 1989, data from S x S (n = 194), H x H (n = 383), and S x H (n = 120) calves were used. Numbers of S x S cows were increased durin...
متن کاملInfluence of Close-Up Starting Programs on Performance of Light-Weight Feedlot Steers Calves during the Early Receiving Period
The influence of close-up feed strategies on growth performance and dietary NE in light-weight feedlot steers during a 56 d receiving period was evaluated. Dietary treatments were formulated to meet the average metabolizable amino acid requirements of calves during 1) the initial 7 d; 2) the initial 14 d; and 3) the initial 21 d following arrival into the feedlot, assuming average interval DMI ...
متن کاملImpact of Grain Processing and Quality on Holstein Steer Performance
The topic of grain processing for feeding ruminants has been reviewed extensively (Nocek and Tamminga, 1991; Huntington, 1997; Theurer et al., 1999; Rowe et al., 1999; Harmon and McLeod, 2001, 2005; Firkins et al., 2001; Harmon et al., 2004; Owens and Zinn, 2005). This review outlines results from trials with feedlot cattle irrespective of breed, with emphasis on digestibility of starch, the pr...
متن کاملCow-calf and feedlot performances of Brahman-derivative breeds.
A study was conducted to compare Brangus, Beefmaster, Gelbray, and Simbrah breed influences for economically important traits. Brangus (9), Beefmaster (12), Gelbray (10), and Simbrah (7) sires were used in purebred and crossbred (Brahman x Hereford F1 cows) matings to generate calves (326) in eight breed groups. Beefmaster cows were of similar size (448 kg), Brangus and Gelbray cows were 11% he...
